Balancing the Busy

BUSYNESS is a modern disease and its main victim is women, according to a healthy food expert.

As more females try to multi-task between work and family, the result is an increase in stress-related diseases such as anxiety, depression, hormone imbalance, infertility and more.

“Women are usually responsible for preparing meals in the home, nurturing and comforting children when they are sick and guiding their children through adolescence into adulthood.

“There are many more health issues facing young females these days compared to 20 years ago and it is essential that mothers, daughters and fathers, too, be able to access reliable health information.

“They will then feel empowered to have open and honest conversations with their children around issues such as period pain, endometriosis, contraception and infertility.”

Ms Vassallo said as Australia’s female population aged more women were having to deal with health issues that arose around menopause.

“This is a topic not often openly discussed in social circles but one that can have far reaching effects on the whole family as women silently struggle with issues of anxiety, depression, thyroid and weight gain during this period of transition,” she said.

“We believe it is time to dissolve the social stigma around this stage of life and create an opportunity for women to discuss openly their stories and their challenges.”

Ms Vassallo has been working as a recipe writer and food stylist for the past 20 years and collaborated with many leaders in the food industry, including Jamie Oliver, Bill Granger and Donna Hay.

She has a keen interest in healthy eating and lifestyle and will present a talk on food as medicine to the conference.
