On the back of White Ribbon Day this Friday Sydney Mum will be wearing orange, What about you?
Not only is Friday the 25th November White Ribbon Day but also Orange Day, a day to take action to raise awareness and prevent violence against women and girls. It is also the beginning of an international campaign – 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign
Taking place between the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Human Rights Day it is a campaign galvanising action and bringing much-needed attention to the lack of funding faced by UNiTE when implementing resources and programs.
UNiTE brings a myriad of initiatives to women and girls across the world – passing and implementing effective laws and policies, services for all women, increasing knowledge and awareness, creating safe public spaces and focusing on prevention to stop the violence – initiatives that need sufficient funds to make effective changes on the ground.
As a mother of two daughters, living in a metropolis like Sydney with freedom and security, I struggle to fathom how hostile one’s home/work/social environment can be. I can try to imagine but until I walk in their shoes I have no way of understanding. But I still want to do my bit, be socially conscious so my daughters and son learn they make a difference to the lives of others.
Will you be wearing orange over the next 16 days? Orange your profile picture to show your support and spread the word on all social media platforms using the hashtags #orangetheworld and #16days
